The Riga Opera Festival is an annual festival that takes place in the prestigious Latvian National Opera – an architectural masterpiece that alone would be worth a visit. First held in 1998, the popular event features the best not only Latvian but also international opera. The festival has become a valuable tradition of the Latvian capital, as it is the first opera festival of this size in scale in all of Northern Europe. Highly anticipated by opera-lovers from all over the world and Latvian audiences, the festival offers performances of works by legendary composers such as Bach, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and of course Wagner. Richard Wagner was assistant conductor in Riga from 1837 to 1839, which was the time in which he was composing his Roman epic Rienzi. Now, the festival features also performances by guest companies that wish to follow in these incredible footsteps and perform in the history filled city of Riga.
The roots of opera traditions of the city and the whole country of Latvia can be traced back to the eighteenth century. The Duchy Courland served as setting for the first musical productions, and many of the first traveling operas appeared in the capital Riga. The official beginning is however in 1912, when the Latviešu Opera was built in Riga by Pāvuls Jurjāns. The Latvian National Opera’s debut performance was on January 23rd 1919, and featured, naturally Richard Wagner’s opera Der fliegende Holländer.
This year, another array of incredible performances are awaiting the Latvian and international audiences: from Don Giovanni, to Lady Macbeth of Mtsenk or L’elisir D’Amore: only the best of the best can be expected at the famous Riga Opera Festival.
